River Bend Golf & Recreation Area is a 420-acre public golf course and municipal recreation area located in Red Deer, Alberta.  Golf activities include an 18-hole, championship golf course, driving range/practice facility, golf academy, and 9 hole mini-links course. Outdoor recreation activities include Discovery Canyon’s lazy river tube ride, 4-season playground, boat launch, picnic areas, green-spaces, biathlon range, and trails for hiking, biking, & cross-country skiing.

Description of Role

River Bend Golf & Recreation Society is seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented individual with excellent communication and leadership skills to fill our Course & Grounds Superintendent.  As the leader of the Grounds Department Team, the Superintendent directs, coaches, and coordinates all the activities associated with the maintenance of the property grounds.  This includes meeting or exceeding patron’s satisfaction by providing an extremely high-quality golf and recreation experience at this year-round facility, while showing prudent cost controls for the Grounds Department.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Coordinate and schedule the day today operations to ensure that all staff are fully trained in the safe operation and maintenance of all equipment utilized in maintaining the golf course and recreation spaces.
  • Exhibit leadership qualities that contribute to a culture of attracting and retaining highly motivated team members.  Lead by example by taking a proactive position on all issues concerning the operation of the golf course and recreation area.
  • Supervise and control all maintenance expenses associated with the golf course and recreation area, including payroll, supplies, chemicals, and fertilizers.
  • Produce the annual budget that includes all expenses incurred in the maintenance department.
  • Assist the General Manager to establish business goals through timely budgeting and capital project planning.
  • Supervise and participate in the use and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers & pesticides) on the grounds in compliance with all local, provincial and federal regulations.
  • Ensure proper winterization of the golf course to facilitate good recovery in the spring.
  • Oversee all on-course and recreation projects,directing and delegating where applicable.
  • Coordinate and perform maintenance to our winter recreational area activities (Nordic trails, 4-season playground,parking lot, etc.).
  • Conduct performance reviews to recognize, motivate, improve, and maintain employee performance, productivity, and growth.

Desired Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Management or a 2-year Turfgrass Diploma.
  • Valid Alberta Landscape Pesticide Applicator’s License or the ability to obtain one promptly.
  • Knowledge in the safe use, mixing, and application of chemicals associated with golf course & park maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive influence with ability to communicate effectively with management, employees, patrons, board of directors, and city personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Efficient and detail orientated.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills that support open communication within the Society’s leadership team.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical operations of landscape equipment and hydraulics to guide our Equipment Technician when necessary.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when necessary (including weekends and holidays).
  • Ability to calibrate sprayers and fertilizer spreaders.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Familiarity with Toro Lynx irrigation software an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Game of Golf, rules and methods of play.
