ABOUT THE CLUB: Marine Drive Golf Club is a traditional, yet progressive private members golf club, located in Vancouver, British Columbia. This Arthur Vernon Macan designed course opened in 1922 and has been privileged to have some of Canada’s finest golfers as members. With a young, passionate core of golfers, tournaments are frequent and standards are high.
Description of Role
ABOUT THE TEAM: Working alongside newly hired Golf Course Superintendent Jamie Robb and Associate Superintendent Dain Mikulic, the Assistant Superintendent will be an integral part of leading a team of up to 30 staff members on a daily basis. The club is building an exciting, passionate team led by young, energetic COO (GM) Tom Schellenberg. UPCOMING IN 2020: Working with prominent American Golf Course Designer Jim Urbina, the club is working on a Master Plan that would see all 18 tee complexes rebuilt, modern irrigation and drainage installed, select greens expanded, all new satellites purchased, Better Billy Bunkers installed, cart paths removed, a new fleet of equipment purchased, the driving range rebuilt and the Links facility upgraded. The club’s centennial year is fast approaching and the race is on to bring Marine Drive back to being the best conditioned course in Western Canada.
Responsibilities and Duties
POSITION OVERVIEW: This leader will be responsible for aiding in overseeing the maintenance, operation and management of the golf course and associated grounds and facilities. He/she is also responsible for aiding in all facets of staff management within the department. The person in this position will be responsible for developing relationships interdepartmentally and with suppliers, contractors and consultants. In the absence of the Associate and Golf Course Superintendents he/she is expected to make decisions and fill those responsibilities.
Desired Experience
QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a degree or diploma from a recognized post secondary university or college in a turfgrass related field. Have worked on a golf course for a minimum of 3 seasons and possess a desire to become a Golf Course Superintendent. Have or be able to obtain a BC Landscape Pesticide Applicator Certificate within 90 days of employment.
Compensation and Perks
COMPENSATION: $55K - $65K DOE plus benefits and 5% club matched pension. ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: Golf privileges, meals, association dues for BCGSA, CGSA and GCSAA and conference participation.
