Mickelson National Golf Club of Canada is an exciting new private golf course located west of Calgary. Designed by 5 time major winner and world golf hall of fame member Phil Mickelson. Mickelson National is designed to facilitate large volumes of spectators to potentially hold professional golf tournaments such as the Canadian Open. An estimated 3 million cubic meters of material was shaped to be reflective of the mountain views. The water features and sensational landscaping add up to undoubtedly a world class golf course design. Seeding started early 2017 and finished the fall of 2019. Ten holes were opened for preview play for the general public during the summer of 2019. Grand opening of all18 holes is scheduled for the spring of 2020.
Description of Role
Mickelson National is looking to hire three Turf interns to our team for the 2020 season. These positions will assist in a wide range of tasks including maintenance of the irrigation system, cultural practices, staff management, golf course construction, recordkeeping and grooming the golf course. This is a fantastic opportunity for the selected individuals to learn a wide range of skills and be apart of the exciting final stages of grow in and construction!
Responsibilities and Duties
• Safely apply pesticides and fertilizers • Maintain daily spray and fertilizer records • Assist in weekly cultural practices (top dressing, aeration, verticutting etc.) • Manage small crews and assist in training seasonal staff on all aspects of golf course maintenance • Perform Irrigation Auditing on all areas of the property • Water areas on golf course as needed • Irrigation sprinkler head repair • Monitor and record keeping of moisture levels on greens, tees and fairways • Troubleshoot irrigation electrical issues • Assist in any golf course construction projects (bunker construction, drainage construction, overseeding etc.) • Operate wide variety of equipment (tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, etc.) • Assist as needed in all other areas of golf course maintenance
Desired Experience
• Possess Turfgrass Certificate/Diploma/Degree or working towards these credentials • Valid Driver's License (Required) • Have reliable transportation to be on time for work (Required) • Flexibility in schedule and willing to work weekends or as needed (Required) • Experience operating Smithco Spray Star sprayer (Preferred) • Experience applying pesticides and fertilizers (Preferred) • Valid Alberta Pesticide Applicators licence (Preferred) • Knowledge of Toro irrigation system (Preferred) • Experience working with two wire decoder irrigation system (Preferred) • Possess a general understanding of golf course maintenance • Able to work independently and part of a team
Compensation and Perks
• Position pays $20 per hour
